My artwork reflects the boundary between mental image and physical reality. The human figure is a common theme in my images. The marks I make are often of a gestural quality. I attempt to pull out the framework of my subject finding shapes and patterns within the image. Layering, underpainting, adding and subtracting are all important features of my approach. A feeling of erosion gives way to the complexity of layered colors that are stripped away and re-illuminated. Dark abstraction alludes to humanistic forms and blurs their distinction. My figures are often elongated and exaggerated, with thick and thin contours intertwined. I don't set out to draw realistically or abstractly; my finished images will lend themselves to one side of the spectrum or the other through my process.
