Jason Watts

About Jason:

Jason Watts’ work could only have evolved out of an intimate love and understanding of Americana. His paintings portray a complex, dynamic world that is grounded in the Midwestern landscape.

In both his work and that of the artists who have influenced him, Watts is able to relate on canvas the time and place where he planted his feet. Though the paintings have universal relevance, his choice to focus on the Midwestern landscape has given his work a narrative, story-like presence. Above all, he sees the landscape as pattern, and draws from it’s rhythmic and repeating visual symbols.

In his most recent work, Watts is fascinated with the commuter experience. Trains, automobiles, and vast stretches of highways are a familiar part of the daily routine- and are used as a primary motif in his paintings. The man-made environment is seen in stark contrast to the natural landscape. It is through this juxtaposition of form and shape that he creates his patterning and colorful compositions.

Primarily working in oil and egg tempera, his process incorporates many thin layers of transparent color to arrive at the saturation that give his pieces a certain dramatic depth and surface quality. It is a slow, time tested process that sometimes takes 4 to 6 months to complete a canvas or wood panel.
